About John

I am a full-time professor and award-winning member of the special event industry. Over my career I have worked on events ranging from international press conferences to private weddings to huge fundraising galas. I have served on the Board of the International Special Event Society (Toronto chapter) and have served as a judge for the Canadian Special Event Awards, Canada’s nation-wide awards for the event industry.

I am currently Program Coordinator at Seneca College in the Event Management Graduate Certificate program and a Professor in the Visual Merchandising Arts program. I have worked with my students on a number of events and projects across the city including Bloor Street Entertains at the Royal Ontario Museum, the Design Exchange Gala and the World AIDS Conference at the Metro Convention Centre. I have a Fine Art honours degree from York University, a Masters degree in Education, as well as college certificates in Interior Decorating and Developing Curricula for the Internet. I have worked freelance as a photographer, curator, interior decorator, and colour consultant. I am also a practicing sculptor, exhibiting regularly in galleries in Toronto.

My artwork is inspired by natural and organic materials: I traditionally work in wood, wax and tree bark. My most recent work represents an evolution in my work by incorporating man-made objects: pulleys, blades and steel rods. I am particularly fascinated by the intersection of man-made and organic; how nature alters the look and very structure these objects, causing them to rust, crumble and degrade in the most beautiful of fashions.

The steel pieces would not be possible without the talented support of blacksmith Andy Pomorski at The Red Barns, who provided technical assistance and guidance on the forging and welding of these projects.

To him I owe my thanks and well-being.
